Organic farming is a form of agriculture that relies on techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost, and biological pest control. Depending on whose definition is used, organic farming uses fertilizers and pesticides (which include herbicides, insecticides and fungicides) if they are considered natural (such as bone meal from animals or pyrethrin from flowers), but it excludes or strictly limits the use of various methods (including synthetic petrochemical fertilizers and pesticides; plant growth regulators such as hormones; antibiotic use in livestock; genetically modified organisms; human sewage sludge; and nanomaterials) in pursuit of goals including sustainability, openness, independence, health, and safety.
Organic agricultural methods are internationally regulated and legally enforced by many nations, based in large part on the standards set by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM), an international umbrella organization for organic farming organizations established in 1972. The USDA definition as of April 1995 is:
Organic may refer to:
Africa is the world's second-largest and second-most-populous continent. At about 30.2 million km2 (11.7 million sq mi) including adjacent islands, it covers six percent of Earth's total surface area and 20.4 percent of its total land area. With 1.1 billion people as of 2013, it accounts for about 15% of the world's human population. The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, both the Suez Canal and the Red Sea along the Sinai Peninsula to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The continent includes Madagascar and various archipelagos. It contains 54 fully recognized sovereign states (countries), nine territories and two de facto independent states with limited or no recognition.
Africa's population is the youngest amongst all the continents; the median age in 2012 was 19.7, when the worldwide median age was 30.4.Algeria is Africa's largest country by area, and Nigeria by population. Africa, particularly central Eastern Africa, is widely accepted as the place of origin of humans and the Hominidae clade (great apes), as evidenced by the discovery of the earliest hominids and their ancestors, as well as later ones that have been dated to around seven million years ago, including Sahelanthropus tchadensis, Australopithecus africanus, A. afarensis, Homo erectus, H. habilis and H. ergaster – with the earliest Homo sapiens (modern human) found in Ethiopia being dated to circa 200,000 years ago. Africa straddles the equator and encompasses numerous climate areas; it is the only continent to stretch from the northern temperate to southern temperate zones.
South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and on the east by Mozambique and Swaziland, and surrounding the kingdom of Lesotho. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World or the Eastern Hemisphere.
South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world. Two of these languages are of European origin: Afrikaans developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most white and coloured South Africans; English reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life, though it is fourth-ranked as a spoken first language.
Pankaj is a Hindu given name, common in Nepal and India. It has its roots in the Sanskrit word paṅkaja which refers to the lotus flower. The word is a compound of paṅka 'mud' and the suffix -ja 'born from, growing in'. The associated symbolism is of the lotus that is born in mud and blossoms after arising from mud. The lotus flower is also the national flower of India and is considered to be a symbol of Buddhist teaching (cf. Nalanda).

Warren Bam grows organic grapes and blueberries at Lushof, in South Africa. As a boy, Warren lived nearby this big farm, where his father worked as a truck driver. Warren dreamt about being a farmer himself, but in the days of apartheid it was unthinkable that a coloured boy would ever manage a farm. Nevertheless, many year later, Warren Bam came to be in charge of the very farm where his father worked. He is a really inspired farmer with amazing knowledge and enornmous feeling for soil and ecology.
The Green economy is important to Uganda because it gives farmers and traders opportunities to create wealth in a way that sustains and protects the environment. Here is a time lapse of the process of planting organic tomatoes. First spreading the fertilizer, followed by laying the mulch and waterline and punching the holes and the planting. Last is connecting all the strings to trellis the tomotoes to. After this is done there is some time to sucker them and trim them until the picking time starts.

Houweling's Tomatoes is a family-owned operation dedicated to reducing its environmental footprint, one nutrient-rich tomato at a time. The tomatoes at this facility are fed nitrogen, potassium, and other elements like iron and zinc to give it that extra kick. Plants sink their roots in coconut fibers, aiding in the growth of vines that can reach approximately a foot a week. Since the facility is completely enclosed, there are no weeds, no fungus, or need for any pesticides or fungicides. The Dervaes family has been growing their own food for more than a decade. They've been at the forefront of urban homesteading by growing thousands of pounds of food annually in an average-size backyard. The Dervaes' urban homestead is sustainable and dense. They grow and raise 400 varieties of vegetables, fruits, and edible flowers that amount to about 6,000 pounds of food a year, enough to feed the family with surplus left over to sell....

Even though farming can be a very challenging business, there is usually a solution for every problem. In this episode we visit three enterprising farmers in Limpopo province, and we highlight their ability to overcome challenges. Very often a simple change of strategy can make all the difference. When problems arise, good farmers need to ask for advice and they need to be able to make tough decisions. This was certainly the case with Mabore Molapo, a chicken farmer from Maruleng. She had to overcome many serious problems before she could start making a sustainable profit. The same can be said for Leydah Sekgobela who had to make careful plans to diversify her operation before she was successful. So too for Koena Jack Moradu, a nearby mango farmer, whom we also visited to find out what h...
In this episode we meet a group of enterprising farmers that have made remarkable progress in a short period – so much so that their farm is used as a benchmark to teach other start-up Nguni cattle farmers. The Khuduthathe & Kgolagano Cooperative lease land from the Royal Bafokeng tribe. In 2012 they successfully applied to participate in a national Nguni cattle development project, and became the beneficiaries of 58 cows and one bull. The herd has grown significantly since then, and this project has proven to be hugely successful because of the willingness of the members to work hard, to make sacrifices, and to accept advice from extension officers. We also visit a fascinating Peppadew project in Limpopo Province. This uniquely South African plant produces fruit that are in high demand...
